Veterans community event in Oakhurst - September 2018

Stand Down: a military term meaning soldiers can put down their weapon, stop fighting, and care for themselves.

This is what volunteers and the non-profit charity, Caring Veterans of America are doing on September 21 – 22, 2018 at the Oakhurst Community Center; helping Veterans care for themselves

(559) 760-5056

This gives many local veterans living in the mountain area a chance to get their personal and business affairs in order with the help of local resources.

The CVA wants these veterans to remember the time in their life when they were proud of themselves. Veterans know what it's like to be a winner, and sometimes it may take a civilian friend to encourage them to win again. It’s never too late to turn things around; people can save themselves and get back on their feet with the right push from positive people.

This event hopes to encourage struggling veterans to strive for a better life.

Events like this are important because it gives civilians like myself an opportunity to connect on a much deeper level with our military veteran community. I personally love to volunteer at Homes 4 Families, because my father is a veteran. This is my way of giving back to the veteran community.

Caring Veterans of America is a non-profit charity that provides support for veterans and their families.  They do meaningful work, which creates unforgettable experiences. They want to improve the lives of veterans and promote a positive change. Assisting the CVA would be the V.A. Registration, local non-profits, and volunteers.

This 2 day Stand Down event is on Sept 21 from 9:00am to 4:30pm and Sept 22 from 9:00am to 1:00pm. It will be held at the Oakhurst Community Center. There will be free food both days. If you attend both days you will be able to receive free gear as well.

This is all happening because our community cares, and we would like to make a difference for good people. We offer people jobs when in need and try to help them as much as we can with getting them back on their feet.

People may ask why CVA host’s events for veterans like the Stand Down, but as civilians we will never understand what our service men and women go through. Many who serve for our country find it so hard to come back home and adjust to civilian life. This organization gives a civilian a chance to serve a Veteran. Also, they lead by example, because it's a group of Veterans helping Veterans.

Some veterans have never had a proper transitional course or program to help them enter civilian life. Programs like Brothers at War (http://brothersatwarresiliency.com/) DO exist, and are available for veterans and their families. We hope to see a Brothers At War resiliency workshop in Central California very soon. Sponsors are welcome!

There is no checklist in civilian life, sometimes veterans need a hand UP, not a hand OUT.
